Tokyo prosecutors decided not to indict Shinnosuke Abe, the former manager of the Yomiuri Giants baseball team who resigned after his arrest last month on suspicion of assaulting his daughter.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office announced its decision not to charge the 47-year-old former star catcher on June 15.

Abe was taken into custody on May 25 for allegedly grabbing his 18-year-old daughter by the collar and pushing her down at their home in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward.

“This is entirely due to my own immaturity, and all the fault is mine,” Abe had said in a statement released through a representative.

The case drew attention not only because of Abe’s stardom but also for the unusual way it came to light.

According to investigative sources, Abe’s daughter described the incident with her father to the generative AI chatbot ChatGPT to ask for advice.

Based on its response, she contacted a child consultation center, which in turn placed an emergency call to police.

Officers who arrived at the home arrested Abe on the spot.

He reportedly told investigators he became angry when his eldest and second daughters were fighting, and then lost his temper when the eldest daughter “talked back” after he told them to be quiet.

Police released Abe shortly after his arrest and continued the investigation on a voluntary basis.

When police referred the case to prosecutors on June 9, investigators attached an opinion recommending “lenient punishment,” sources said.

Abe resigned as manager of the Giants immediately after his arrest.

The eldest daughter said through a representative that she was not hit or injured in the case and has reconciled with her father.

She also apologized for the way the incident became such a “major incident.”
