Japan’s most decorated Winter Olympics athlete Miho Takagi may soon be adding the nation’s People’s Honor Award to her accolodes.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara announced the intent to honor the newly retired speed skater at a news conference on May 22, where he said Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed officials to consider the award.

A formal decision will be made after hearing opinions from various experts.

Takagi has won more medals at the Winter Games than any Japanese athlete, male or female, with 10 medals.

The speed skater took home three bronze medals from the Milano Cortina Olympics in February. She subsequently retired from competition after the World Championships in March.
